It’s hard to believe that 25 years ago in June of 1993, the first JURASSIC PARK film was released in movie theaters world wide. I saw it with my family at the theaters across the boulevard from my home, in Sherman Oaks, CA. I remember the mind blowing experience of seeing the amazing dinosaur F/X for the first time. Steven Spielberg opened the door to a whole new world when he created JURASSIC PARK. That film made a zillion dollars, and was the number one film of all time, for a very long time.

In 1977, John Travolta was a box office superstar with his disco hit film, SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER. Not only did he return to the big screen dancing, but this time he sang his way in to our hearts, with yet another box office smash, GREASE, which takes place in the 1950′s. The film GREASE was based on the hit stage musical of the same name, and featured an all-star cast.

JAWS 2… is the other film that was released on June 16th of the same year, and is a sequel to JAWS, the box office mega hit. This film is the polar opposite to that of the musical I just reviewed. I’m talking about returning to the dark, frigid waters of Amity Island, which was also the setting of the first film. You might be asking yourself, what’s so special about this film? When we begin talking about the summer blockbuster season, it’s generally in the month of May. However, the folks at Marvel decided to release the new film Avengers: Infinity War a little earlier, in the last full week of April. Could it be that Marvel is just that excited about celebrating their 10th year making films based upon comic book superheroes? If so, they are sure doing it up in style with this mega release, and has it ever been successful so far.

Trends come and go, but one of the most recent seems to be sticking around and is popular among adults. I’m talking about coloring books… for adults! Yes, that childhood pastime has returned, but this time it’s with themes that appeal to the nature of us grownups, and with a vast variety of subjects, this new market has opened the door for many artists and illustrators, allowing them as well, the opportunity to do something fun and whimsical with their art.

This film is animated, however not the animation of those childrens stories we are use to, and have come to love. Rather, this film is truly done in the style of Impressionist and post-Impressionist artist, Vincent van Gogh. It won several awards, and was also nominated in the Best Animated Film catagory, sadly it lost to Pixar’s COCO.

Which film has gotten me this excited? THE SHAPE OF WATER, directed by Guillermo del Toro, who is without a doubt, a self proclaimed fanboy, and perhaps the poster child for fanboys everywhere. Del Toro is famed for bringing us great fantasy stories. HELLBOY 1 & 2, PAN’S LABYRINTH, and PACIFIC RIM, are just a few that bring us into his world, and his slant on addressing every day life situations.
