In Must Love Death, shown at the competition within the Ravenna Nightmare Film Fest 2009, we follow the action of poor Norman (the typical romantic nerd) who after being dismissed countless times comes across the girl who’ll turn out to be the love of his life. A threat to their love will come from her ex boyfriend, the typical nice guy acting in shallow tv series and winning women only thanks to his bank account and his fame rather than his appeal.
A youngman travels down a lonely cold highway. Snow & ice slush underneath the tires of his car as he travels alone. The youngman listens to the radio & pops pills to stay awake on his way to an unknown destination. Driving for a long time & very tired, he must stay awake & continue onward. His fuel gauge indicates he is low on fuel & must stop soon before he’s completely outta gas.
It’s an interesting experiment this one brought forth by the Chilean director Patricio Valladares and by the italian scriptwriter Andrea Cavaletto, a movie made up of three segments connected one another by the killer. In a sort of metacinema Toro Loco meets the characters of the three different episodes and roughly kills them, giving birth to surreal dialogues full of social involments.
Norma is one of the prostitutes caged in a sort of sexual fun park. Her life is about to take a sudden turn since a young boy sets up his mind to carry her away from such a sordid place. Nevertheless Norma’s dreams shatter against the pimps’ violence who roughly kill the boy. Driven by desperation she flees away and falls into a weird being who proposes her a deal in order to guarantee her a fearsome revenge.
Jenny and Steve are two adults decided to spend a weekend in a place in England with an evocative name: Eden Lake. The lake and nature are the perfect setting for the romantic trip the couple is going to spend, and a perfect place for Steve’s proposal. But the arrival of a boys gang breaks the magic, annoying the couple with their shouting voices and loud radio. The situation gets dramatically worse when the group makes Steve’s car disappear, forcing the couple to chase after the thieves and face them. The consequences of this offense will be totally unexpected, turning the eden in a neverending nightmare.
During eighteenth century witch-hunting is reaching its climax, becoming a real fever infecting persecutors aware that blood period is going to an end. East-Europe is sought by cardinal De Ceville, an assassin who haunts out presumed heretics for satiating his will of death. Young Mary participates to a ritual of Satan’s worshippers, offering her own body to complete an ancestral rite with ill-omened result. Point of view changes in a snowy Helsinki, where a vampire hangs about melancholically through the white landscape, searching for her origin.
A young woman with a white veil on her face proceeds shuffling between trees and leaves lifted up by the wind, careless of rain flowing down. Pale obscurity doesn’t hide her figure who slowly and relentlessly is coming back home, to the house where she lived with her young husband, before death devours her body.
