THE VISIT – M. Night Shyamalan

The visit

Some filmmakers take several films before they have a true box-office hit on their hands. For M. Night Shyamalan, he hit it out of the ballpark his very first film, The sixth sense in 1999. Since then, he has had a string of misses and very few hits…..until now. M. Night has redeemed himself with his latest scarefest, The visit. This “Twilight Zone” style tale is fitting for this time of year…Pre-Fall…Halloween time coming up…and in typical M. Night tradition there is a plot twist you will not see coming!

BLACK MASS – Scott Cooper

Black mass

The Gangster film genre has been around since the very beginning of films back in the 1930′s and 40′s going through the 1970′s with The Godfather and the 1990′s with Goodfellas, and now into 2000-teens with Black Mass. This film is based on the real-life gangster, James “Whitey” Bulger, the worst gang criminal to come out of the very dangerous area of South Boston.

THE FALLEN – Gabriel Kipling Tyner

The Fallen 2014

As an atheist I’m typically not a fan of religious films. That said The Fallen is an outstanding dark re-telling of the story of Genesis by first time director Gabriel Kipling Tyner. The film starts off of course in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve, granted there is a bit a stretch that they aren’t naked however this film re-creates and the interpretation of the story in a very artistic format.

The Green Inferno – Eli Roth coloured it blood red!

Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno has finally got release dates, after the usual Festivals screenings in 2013, the film had been set for a September 5 release date the next year, but then suddenly it was pulled from the schedules over internal problems at financiers “Worldview Entertainment”. When Christopher Woodrow, who was CEO, left the company with little warning in June 2014, the company’s new management did put a halt to spending based on deals made by the guy who used to lead “Worldview”, the company was committed to paying some of the big costs associated with theatrical distribution, as a result The Green Inferno release had been delayed indefinitely and it’s been in limbo ever since, but is now finally set to emerge thanks to a new deal with Jason Blum‘s distribution label “BH-Tilt”.

THE FAPPENING – Sean Weathers

The fappening

What do you get when you cross the comedic dialogue brilliance of Kevin Smith, the grittiness of an 80’s Able Ferrara and the sleazy fun of Russ Myer? You get the films of Sean Weathers.

STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON – F. Gary Gray

straight outta compton

In the 1980′s, among the music of Alternative/New Wave, Heavy Metal, Top 40, and Dance Club techno music – there was the urban music of Rap. Rap wasn’t taken very seriously for many years. It was also a very “young” form of music back then with groups like Grand Master Flash & the Furious Five, Whodini, and Sugarhill Gang. It was up until the mid-80′s when bands like The Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Run-DMC were putting songs at the top of the charts and money in the music industries pockets.

THE GIFT – Joel Edgerton

the gift

There is nothing like a good suspense/thriller to keep you entertained and The Gift is no exception. This is a film on the same lines as anything by Alfred Hitchcock and films like Fatal Attraction. This is a film about revenge taken to a whole new level and it tells us that you should be nice to everyone.

PIXELS – Chris Columbus

Pixels

If there’s one thing about all of Adam Sandler films it’s that he always takes us back to a much happier and simpler time in our lives by bringing us “old school” rock and roll and Pop Culture. There is no other bigger Pop Culture from yesteryear than the video games we all grew up with: Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Centipede, Space Invaders, Q-Bert, Frogger, and many others.
